In the above video we have seen Adverbs and it’s kinds. We have learnt that Adverbs give more information about Verbs, Adjectives or another Adverb. Now let us see formation of Adverbs.

Most Adverbs are formed by adding ‘ly’ to adjectives. For example,

  • clever cleverly
  • wise wisely
  • kind kindly
  • foolish – foolishly
  • quick quickly
  • beautiful beautifully
  • cheerful cheerfully
  • sad sadly
  • meaningful meaningfully
  • bold boldly
  • brave bravely
  • bright brightly
  • eager eagerly
  • innocent innocently
  • obedient obediently
  • polite politely
  • safe safely
  • graceful graceful
  • anxious anxiously
  • hopeful hopefully
  • hopeless hopelessly
  • rude rudely
  • usual usually
  • faithful faithfully
  • perfect perfectly

When the adjective ends in y preceded by a consonant, y is changed to i and ‘ly is added. For example…

  • happy happily
  • ready readily
  • heavy heavily
  • lazy lazily
  • angry angrily
  • weary wearily
  • crazy crazily
  • hungry hungrily
  • shaky shakily
  • hasty hastily
  • nasty nastily
  • easy easily
  • noisy noisily
  • lazy lazily
  • wary warily
  • funny funnily
  • lucky luckily
  • lousy lousily
  • moody moodily
  • gloomy gloomily
  • greedy greedily
  • hearty heartily
  • pretty prettily
  • shabby shabbily
  • speedy speedily
  • untidy untidily

When the adjective ends in le, e is changed to y. For example,

  • single – singly
  • double doubly
  • triple triply
  • feeblefeebly
  • gentle gently
  • humble humbly
  • simply simply
  • audible audibly
  • visible visibly
  • amicable amicably
  • forcible forcibly
  • horrible horribly
  • inconsolable inconsolably
  • possible possibly
  • reliable reliably
  • sensible sensibly
  • terrible terribly
  • favorable favorably
  • unbelievable unbelievably

Some Adverbs are made of Nouns and a qualifying Adjective as follows.

  • some + times = sometimes
  • mean + time = meantime
  • mean + while = meanwhile
  • yester + day = yesterday
  • mid + way = midway
  • other + wise = otherwise

This is the way, Adverbs are formed from Adjectives and Nouns. In the next lesson, we will learn Prepositions.
